Keeping the side up.... but which ???

[this derives from the lessons topic but I think needs its own discussion since we have some confusion. In standard, what is the poise?

I actually learned something useful last lesson.....keeping my right side up!
Right? The both partner's have to keep their left up. However, the R mustn't drop as a concequence - is this what your coach was working on?
Actually quite the contrary, he's focusing on the RIGHT side.
He's saying both partners have to keep their right side up, however the left must't drop as a consequence.
So far it's really working....

If you are asking about the forum context, the whole thread is quoted above - I don't know what the context was for SW...

I think I must've been too vague in my first post.
It came up when we were in promenade position, especially in the promenade runs. But I guess there should be a dynamic change between elevating the left side and right side depending on the figure. So open to discussion.....

AHHHHH!!!
Now it makes sense.. Yup, and very hard to pull off for the follow by the way, as the temptation is to move your body to the R side of the man - the same sensation that I think the man gets in a shape, such as a contra check or lunge. You have to shape to the opposite direction that you are moving. In PP the man OTOH has a very natural extension away form the woman.

Hmmm....I don't think there's going to be a neutral shape anymore. Seems like coach was trying to say that either the left side is stretched or the right side is stretched, not both or neither. ::)Hmmm...any opinion on that?

Maybe he was just trying to stop you from doing a "wheelie" on those promenade runs.
Interesting, though -- most people (including me) have the opposite problem with promenade: they want to dive into it, pointing the free hand/arm downward in the direction of motion.

I think thats exactly what SW did mean - he was doing the same thing and his coach told him to keep his side up

Well. The answer is stretch your upper body up as much as you can - and then stretch one side even more

This is all most interesting, b/c I 'do' keep both sides well lifted. I have found that it is a common error to either stretch the lead side/s up, which causes the man's right/lady's left to sag on the through steps, or reach for the lead side; causing a downward pointing of the lead arm/s, and an abnormal stretch of the man's left/lady's right sides.
When there was a stretch at all, I have known it to be the following sides as the feet step through the partnership.
