Isn't a troll someone who doesn't agree with the community consensus? Something like a anti-nazi in the 3rd Reich? Or a communist in the 1950's USA?

It would seem to me we have useful debate about musicality in dance  It is it not fascinating that no one has yet identified the 'odd one out' The reality is I think that we have some very scared people whose perception of what is and what is not dance is being challenged at its very core.

Or at least we would have a very interesting debate if there weren't so many pointed and insulting statements. Mass generalisations and insults do no help to anyone and are what classifies a troll.

Afer reading the PM from albanaich, i know have  better understanding of where he is coming from. First lets start with what this: Musical is"of the nature of or resembling music" so therefore musicality is the quality or condition of being musical, or in other words the quality or condition of resembling music. This definition of musicality is at the heart of the arguments brought forward by albanaich. You may be asking 'how in the hell does this refer to ballroom" well from what i can assertain it seems that his ideas refer to how well the dances imitates the music being used, this ofcourse means we are talking about floorshows/showdances and not dancesport in general as this would be quite an impossible task. I would like to bring in some examples:

The above is a demonstration of former IDU World Ballroom Dance Champions Warren & Kristi Boyce, and as you can see throughout their performance, the sequences of steps and flourishes seems to match up throughout with the music that hs been chosen, this is the interpretation of the music into dance, or the musicality according to the definition above. Here another example can be seen:

In the intro of this quickstep you can see how the flourishes with arms and body movement directly relates to the emphasis of the musical qualities. And another

I hope everyone can see that this type of a discussion most definately hs a place on PDO, though we must make sure not to hurt anyone with wild generalisations and accusations and keep this place as friendly as possible. Albanaich i know you are only new here but it is imperrative that you listen to others arguments and restrict what you say about ballroom and latin as this is, afterall, a community for that. We love to have convesations about these styles, but please be mindful.

Why shouldn't it apply to dancesport?

Here's an example from West Coast Swing. . . . . . .Two strangers improvising informally to a random piece of music, they hit every naunce of the music, albiet they are top class dancers, but this sort of thing is definitely achievable in dancesport - its just that there is no expectation that it should be achieveable. Swing dancers are tested on their ability to improvise to the music with a random parther. It's what makes them Swing dancers, Argentine Tango is the same.

For Swing and AT dancers this ability to improvise, or even to choreograph the dance and have the movements are linked to the music is what defines dance - moving to the beat, as in dancesport, is simply a form of gymnastics. . . . .

And you can carry it a stage further, this couple is doing ballet that is choreographed to match the music - and the lyrics, awesome.
