When people write things on the inside of books. Personal messages, whatever.
I DO NOT want my book written in, especially not in your lazy handwriting. Now that ugly blue-pen message telling me that no doubt I will find the book useful is there forever, marring the beauty of the book.

Hmmm. OTOH I love the connection to the earlier owner of the book - if they cherrished it. Older books often have a dedication as part of being a gift or a signature as an owner. While this is not a good thing if you are collecting it (which I used to do) - unless its the author or other 'notable' person, I actually like those signatures. They personalize the book somehow...

you may feeling differently in 20-30-40 years.
i've come to enjoy books with handwriting, especially copious personal notes. what a delicious find... a portal into the mind of a loving reader.
