Leads: How do you choose partners?

Here's a few topics for leads: How do you choose who to ask for a dance? Consider the follwing:
Staying within your social group vs. "working the room"
Newbies vs. advanced dancers
Visitors / people you don't know vs. familiar partners
Choosing specific partners for specific dances vs. the random approach
Dancing with partners out of your age group

I look for the cutest girl in the room and go straight to the lady sitting next to her.

That's because someone else always gets to the cute girl first.

I like to work the room. Other than my DW, I seldom dance with the same partner more than two times a night. I like to get around, see how everyone is doing. And I try to remember which dances I've done with who, so the next week I can ask them to dance something that we haven't danced together before, or at least not lately.

Ah, the infamous case the joint style.
Yeah, I sneak in, take their dances, and then I split. They never know what hit them.

And we shall call him The Rocket City Flash.
Since I'm a girl, I don't have the same 'askin' issues' the fellas have. Nobody asks me to dance at my local social but BabyJ, our lord and head coach, and occasionally occasionally one other guy.
Elsewhere, most guys don't ask me to dance, except for tiny Asian men who love to get flung around, and I'll dance with my 'core fellas', whoever that might be in our party. Otherwise, I just dance with whoever I get in the foxtrot mixer, and just hope it's [name withheld] because he makes me feel all chewy.
My main male won't ask other ladies to dance unless they're 'friend of core women' because he's a little shy, and at the studio, the older ladies usually reject him because he's not The Lord Head Coach. My secondary male is getting a little better about asking ladies to dance, but he still won't ask anyone at DW, because he's self-absorbed and needs to be clobbered.

Damn straight!
Newbies vs. advanced dancers: I probably spend more time with newbies right now, because we're a bit short on advanced dancers at the moment. (We've lost a few due to injuries, job problems, and moving away.) I like for it to be about 50-50. I love dancing with the new dancers, but if you do too much of it, you do develop bad habits. And sometimes there's nothing like getting an advanced partner on the floor and just cutting loose with them.
