from what I can see most people on PDO do Standard... But there have got to be some other American Style people on here with me!!
I dance both Smooth and Rhythm, but once I get to a high level I think I might just stick to Smooth. It is my favorite and it feels more natural to me

I started out doing rhythm and smooth. Actually, when I first started, I knew nothing about ballroom dancing at all, other than the fact that it exists. I was not aware that there were multiple styles within it. I started out by taking group classes at SUNYSB which had two separate ballroom entities - their ballroom team and dance club, which was technically open for everyone, but the bulk of participants were faculty/staff members and their spouses, so this is what I joined, being married to a faculty member. So when the teacher announced at the first class that she teaches american style, I thought that was somewhat redundant distinction - we are in America, afterall, so teaching American style makes sense, and did not bother to ask for clarification. I only found that there is an international style a few years later, and did not find out what the difference was until I started competing.

I dance both Smooth and Rhythm but I must admit that my first love is Smooth. However, that may change when I start studying Bolero...

my first lessons were in smooth and rhythm - I loved rumba and bollero but preferred int chacha and samba to the others. Never did take to smooth I'm afraid - I'm too much the Englishwoman

I feel like I'm in a straight jacket when I dance standard.
I just love the freedom of smooth! I guess I'm too much of an American...
