How the heck do you glue gross upon gross of stones on a dress without making a royal mess? And how long does it take?

I think its done with a cocktail stick and a spot of glue. And people do hundreds of stones an hour...
needless to say, I've never done it...

Ye gods! Sounds hideous.
Doesn't sound like ironing them on is a good alternative...

I can see how it could be zen ... kinda like PDOoodling
lol. Just kidding! I do see how a repetitive action like that could be ... soothing. But 50 - 60 gross is a bit much, unless you have months and months to do it.
I know that doing ones own stoning is a great way to get costumes on a budget, though. Buy a plain dress and stone it yourself. I guess it works, if you have the patience.

OTOH its a bit crazy to put all that work and crystal money into a dress thats half-baked. Better to get a good dress and then stone it yourself. It will last...

yes and then there are stones and stones!. I have bought a few frocks from Hong Kong and as much as they are well made if you go cheap on the stones they are the iron on ones and they fall off all the time and you are constantly having to replace.
the one in my avatar has swarovski Crystals and they have very secure no problem at all

Agreed. When I said plain, I meant unstoned, not necessarily cheap. Cheap makes no sense to me, stoned or otherwise.
