warm-up - cool-down

So you stretched already - and at that point I can't believe that I can actually dance more than two steps. What do you do first in your dance practise/before lesson?
with pro - heel turns! I do heel turns right round the floor. Its possible to do one every four steps, alternating right and left. Apart from being a great warm-up when you get it going its a lovely sensation...

We start our training session, by doing a very slow modern waltz. no serious shaping, just moving the legs and body, keeping the arm movements small. trying to use the ankles and feet and getting the legs warm....once the body is warm we do some stretching. have to look after this more mature physique
. don't do stretches after. just wait to cool down before I move outside especially in the cold weather so I don't go out all sweaty.

When we start usually a waltz (with pro) or heel turns by myself.

On my own:
heel turns (right and left)
walk around the floor (warms feet up)
standing in one place swinging hips to all four corners
toe raises
With pro, usually tango basics and then on to waltz

With pro, warm up with a nice and easy smooth waltz or american rumba, depending on what we're going to work on that day.

One of the Ladies Drills is heel turns to the right and left.
I did between 100 to 300 a day when I competed.

It was also mandatory by my teacher. He would check the makings on the floor and if they were not clear I had to do them again. If I protested then there was no lesson until he had seen me do a 1000 heel turns.
In the begining I used to call then hell turns.

Oh, they were definitely hell turns when I danced Standard. And the double reverse turned into the d&*$ double reverse. Two of the things I definitely do not miss about Standard. Of course, now I have telemarks...

We warm up with scatter chasses
We cool down by lying flat on the dance floor

warm up with DP doing waltz - a simple sequence of natural and reverse turns - round the floor at least twice. Loosens up and lets you focus on getting your posture and ballance...
