I'm probably the only dancer on the planet that has never watched DWTS.  Thats cause I don't actually own a TV....

I watched faithfully for the first few seasons.  It was better then.Still not actually about dancing, but better.  Now? Oh well.

Fact is once people have seen dancing, they've seen it and you need another story ...

very wise - thats why reality is cheap.

Give me Jane Austen... now there's a 'reality' I can relate to...

According to some people who've been there, a lot of DWTS is scripted -- just like a lot of other "reality" shows.   And,once you add in the public voting, the show really isn't about dance very much if at all.

I don't think it was ever intended to be about dance - it was about entertainment and evrything goes down hill from there on

I think it was intended to get good ratings, which it does if the dancers play up the emotional angle. *shrug*

well TV is about rating which equals advertisers.....which equals money....no other reason for them putting on shows. I have just read that DWTS may move TV channels here, will be interesting to see if it happens and how the show might change.

TV does not HAVE to be about advertising and money.  Thats a new invention.  The BBC was ad free - and it was about producing excellent content.  Of course that had to be paid for as an art form - and most people don't seem prepared to do that so we are stuck with the advertising-sales basis to our entertainment.

In any case, it has to be paid for.  *shrug*   In the US, IIRC, it started out commercial, hence terms like "soap opera."  Those lovely serial dramas were largely paid for by the big household product companies like Proctor and Gamble  -- either that or tobacco companies.

...long deleted passage that made me sound stuffy ...

Long story short.  TV has to get paid for, somehow.   Right now, it's via advertisers who somehow think that middle aged women like myself want to watch sinewy teenagers fake-emoting on DWTS.  Go figure.

In the case of the DWTS people I think that it's sometimes about acting ability/fake emotion rather than logic versus emotion.  Sorry for bringing in that tangent.   Embarrassed

Back to the logic piece, I know quite a few engineering types who literally diagram dance patterns n order to be able to learn them.  Very, very logical dancers.   This doesn't mean that they can't access the emotional parts of themselves. It's just that their primary mode of learning is left brained.

mathematicians, scientists (ahem) - people that like to analyze.  But also people who may have done less body-movement passtimes (obviously we are talkinga about the older dancer).

That's interesting -- people who haven't had the chance to enjoy that part of themselves, accessing it later in life.   Hmm. Gotta think about that. Smiley

having siad that what I find about the ones I know is that they do over analyse the dancing and strive for perfection and they get a bit paralized by it.
