To go BOT - perhaps the first thing I would improve on DF is to get rid of that 'private area' where you are supposed to make suggestions or complaints - but in practice the you feel isolated and vulnerable as there are no witnesses outside the administration.  Sometimes it worked OK but at others it was worse than intimidating both because you had no idea who was actually reading it and you knew full well that no one else on the forum could back you up.  The really odd thing to me was that the forum was proud of this system. 

Whats wrong with raising issues in a public place, whatcha know, thats how we do it normally isn't it?  Imagine if all complaints to city hall or congress had to be done by yourself in a private room with who knows who listening.

Or, they just ignored you, in which case you were left wondering if the darn thing actually worked.

...Even though, with most of those issues, they were common amongst the whole forum and there were definitely a lot of people having the same problem--they just had no idea about each other.

Strike "could", replace it with "would". People I considered friends on there turned their backs on me, as if guilt by association might get 'em put in the stocks. I'm opinionated and terrible, I get that, I understand it... but they let some things slide on there by their special little army of mods that made some of my notions seem downright fluffy.

thats exactly what happened to me - and after the ban one very prominent (non-admin) member who I thought was a friend told me that they did not know what had happpened but I obviously did something really awful or they would not have banned me.

You end up with that kafkaesque hopelessness of facing an amorphous ruling organization that has judged you but left you with no say and no appeal.  I suppose all forums end up being political models of sorts. 

Still we are not a democracy here either but we try to be a benevolent oligarchy!

lol, surprised to find an DF thread here...frankly I like the openness and friendly environment of PDO forum.

perhaps we can help make DF a bit more the same too - anyone can post constructive suggestions here

FWIW, you're not "a danger to the site," elise, you were just a danger to the way the site's currently run and their stake in keeping it that way.
