I did a self-search on google today and found myself mentioned on ballroomtoday.com website. I am not sure who runs it, but it seems to provide a sort of coverage for different competitions in united states. Maybe they try to fill the gaps in dancebeat coverage, because they talk a bit more about pro-am.
Also, at least in my region, they're trying to provide maybe a bit more comprehensive list of competitions. They listed college competitions in nearby states, and our tiny amateur competition which is a part of state olympics.

They must have just started last December. Their archives don't go beyond Dec. 2010. I hope this site will grow, but will still provide coverage for smaller, more local events, too. It is nice to hear about things happening in europe and on the east coast, but sometimes us midwesterners feel a little ignored.

Amen, sister!
I actually belong to another forum (totally unrelated to dance) that has gone to a member-moderated format for that very reason. Their mod staff only handles major conflicts and weird judgment calls. Otherwise, the members moderate themselves. Pretty different. And necessary. That forum has more than a hundred thousand of members and more than 10 million posts.
I belong to another forum (also unrelated to dance) where all new members' comments go to a holding area before being posted. You can join immediately, but your posts ever see the light of day if they're spam.
I guess, if you want to stay in the forum business for the long haul, you have to find ways to minimize wear and tear on the staff.

the way we do it here is that I have to approve any new members so I screen them after they have applied. If we are careful with teh member base then the forum does not really need any moderating - several of our members are mods but I don't think they have had anything to do in over a year.

I'm not sure its actually best for the forum! When we had spammers on here there was something for the mods to so - and a bit of spam spiced the place up a bit
Without it I think the mods got bored and moved onto other activities...

I dunno.Since I just recently joined, I have nothing to compare it to.
It's hard to tell spammers up front, though. Other than that weird character recognition thingie to filter out bots, how can you really know if a person is going to become a spammer before they've had a chance to be one?
Usernames are a hint, sometimes, but I've known more than a few very nice people who had some of the spammiest sounding usernames. So who knows? All you can do is the best you can.*shrug*
