I pin my socks together with diaper pins.  (What are they called in England, "nappies" I think?)  One can also buy these little plastic ring things with "teeth" in the center that will hold socks together in the wash.

The proviso is that the pins can snag on some fabrics so I wash my socks alone.  An extra step but worth the effort to avoid trying to match up vanishing socks.

you mean they come out in the same pairs they went in with???  miracles will happen...
I know if I tried that they would secretly unpin and exchange so that no two pinned together pair would be remotely simililar...

yes I must get my act together and pinning them together will stop them from losing each other but most of the time I am so much of a hurry I check in clothes and move onto the next job! never giving it another thought!

thats the socks deluding you.  they are like the ancient sirens , sing songs of distraction until you have tossed them in the washing machine and pushed that on button - then you can hear them cackling madly as they plan their escapes...

Well I suppose two socks could simultaneously quantum tunnel and exchange places.  I mean there IS a finite probability of that happening.
