Did anyone here belong to a college team and how did this affect their later dancing?

I haven't been through college, but when I do I will start a ballroom team if they don't have one already!

That's how/where I started dancing seriously.
I joined up in my first year of Uni (somehow dance classes fitted in perfectly with my 30+ weekly academic contact hours). I started with Latin, it was great fun and I got to meet some of the nicest people and best teachers in town. So in my second semester I took up private lesson with one of the instructors (only to find out later that she's one of the top dancesport coach/adjuciator in the state). I started doing competition in my second year of Uni and took on a committee role in the dancesport club. In my third year, I became one of the more "senior" members of the dancesport club and taught beginner classes and also assisted in the advanced class. With my competition side of things, I elevated from bronze in second year to level 2 (Open choreography) in my third year and won the National title. The University club kindly supported my competition by sponsoring competition costs.

I went to college in England - and there was no ballroom society, team or any other connection
there again we were into peace-love-dope and sit-ins...

I'm rather surprised by that!

I danced for the Northwestern University team for a while. It was a great experience, but kind of funny how I got involved. I had danced and competed for a number of years, and already graduated from college by that point. I made friends with a girl at the studio where I practiced and she invited me to check out their team. I had no partner at the time, and she thought I might find one through the team. I thought, "Are you kidding? I'm nowhere good enough to dance for a competition team!" Eventually I took her up on it and was shocked to discover I was one of the most advanced people there. So now I always tell people to check out the college teams and not be scared
