Went to my nephews wedding yesterday and after there was the usual reception and then dancing.  My sibs were all there and the hottest thing to do on the dance floor - was to try to make a real ballroom dance frame!

At one point I think we had about 10 people trying to get into dance position - the struggles were hillarious but some of the young ones were quite good.  A neice was interested enough to look it up back at university...

That is fun! W have been ased to do a tango for my cousins 40th. The only problem is the space is 4x6 and carpet.....

Disclaimer:  I haven't read all eight pages.  Based on the OP and the discussion on the first few pages,though, I would say that in some cases, social dance is neither art nor sport. It's just a pastime that a lot (most?) people do -- many of them quite badly. To me it's kind of like cooking.   Pretty much anybody can boil an egg or bake a potato, but that doesn't make them chefs.   Same thing with social dance.  pretty much everybody can dig deep and come up with a passable clutch and sway, but that doesn't make them dance athletes.

I think there are different levels of social dance and that the "higher"/more complex levels aren't doing themselves any favors by arguing that all social dance is art.  I don't think it is.

yes social dancing is just that social dancing, because they want it to be a social evening with friends We go to two socials where the standard of the dancing is a bit higher and they have less issues with us, but we still hve to be careful...we try to do out thing in the supper break when there are less people on the floor.

More often social dancers are scared of advanced (competition) dancers.  I've seen then scuttle off the floor even when dancing with a pro.

well you pay alot of money to have that hammered into you!

Actually did have that told to me. I went to a Over 80's group one night and they thought we were equivilent to Mirko! but one lady came up and said I bet you paid a lot of money to dance like that...?So True. I just dont want to add it up
