it is extreamly helpful as both these works have been out of print for many years, and are only available due to the wonderful work of music collectors accross the world, some of which are nice enough to scan copies and attach them to the internet!

I can sight read but MUCH prefer to hear a piece and then play it.  Wish they had done that when I was learning as a kid...

I was taught to hear and then play (I learnt piano by the Suzuki method when I was young) but recently I've gotten good at sight reading. It's fun.

I'm sure both methods work well - but they depend on the person learning as to which is better, just the same as learning to dance...

Actually, I like it quite a bit, but it is its own thing... if you want a performance of Pictures an an Exhibition that's "true" to the composition, this is not it. 

A few things that I've been listening to on my computer, in the form of crude General MIDI files that I downloaded from various places:

Debussy -- Clair de Lune

Debussy -- Arabesque No. 1 in E

Greig -- "Anitra's Dance" from Peer Gynt (I also have this on CD, from the "Contact" soundtrack)

Beethoven -- Symphony No. 3 (Eroica), 2nd movement
