I'd say it's best to stick with one styling and know and perform it well. In this case, if it has to be closed holds because of a lower division, you may not look as fancy in the open, but you can still make it look good.
Perhaps a slight modification, so that arm stylings are almost the same, but just slightly more liberal in open
well that is what we are doing, but it alerts the judges we are not really an higher level couple. We were told that in our last open we looked better than some of the open couples but came 5th, I take it that it was due to arm styling, but it couled also be historical. I was happy to be 5th but thought it dould be a problem when going to major championships.

Have we heard yet about any of the changes that were discussed in Canberra?

on that note. what do people in level three do regarding their arms. do you have two different type of arms? one lot to the prescribed requirement for our level and then other lot for the open events. As I feel that this sometimes can be a hingerence when you do an open event.

yes we had two sets of arms - pity you can't detach them.
Just had to be careful when you were lucky enough to have the same dances. We very seldom doubled up or if we did it was only one dance. mm

A relaxation of hold can be adopted where applicable, but the general shape of the body should be maintained. This way it's easier to have 2 "choreographies", in graded event you keep the hold, and in open events you relax the hold. Just my 2 cents worth.

Eg In Swing Waltz, in the side steps, the correct hold would be double hand hold facing partner. Relaxation of hold as in one hand is allowed to let go.
Or in Carousel, the correct hold for the chair line (lady lunges back, gent lunge forward, the bit just before the carousel), single hand hold may be adopted whilst still maintaining the shape when relaxation of hold is applicable.

There has been a lot of feet/body position change in the past by level 5 dancers, so they are going to be stricter with what is allowed.
Hence the "no hold" rule becomes "relaxation of hole". General body shape should be maintained.
