Actually, I would say that it's not supposed to ever look silly, but it's so widely accepted and even revered in most dance studios that one would almost think that the objective is to look as silly as possible.

John Cleese' nephew was at my university - maybe you remember the University of Idiots skit?  well, that was us.  So the MP troupe came and did a live performance without any props at the end of the school year.  I was sitting on the floor a few feet from the make-shift wooden block stage. 

Hard to think of anything funnier.
