I ask because I ran across a really nice guy who is just starting ballroom dance lessons.  He was so, so excited after his first lesson that he went shopping -- for a brandnew pair of dress pants.  He, however, elected to keep taking dance lessons in his street shoes.

He could see that the others in class dressed fairly nicely - dress casual.  So he decided he needed pants.  He  couldn't see anything wrong with his shoes, though. *shrug*

That reminds me of when I first started dancing.  The first thing I bought was new shoes -- character shoes, that is.  It took me months to realize the folly of my ways, and created some posture problems that took a while to fix. *sigh*

Question: If you were advising a brand new dancer, what equipment would you say is essential?
(Bear in mind that  most brand newbies are not dance crazy yet, so price probably still is an issue.)
