I've heard it called the ballroom grimace.  You know.  That frozen smile that some competitors wear. Yet so many do wear it, which makes me wonder why. Is there something about a smile, even a frozen one, that makes a better impression on judges?  

Would it not be better to wear a neutral expression and dance well than to wear a frozen grimace?  What have you competitive dancers experienced?  What do your coaches tell you?  Does it depend on the judge?  Is it all subjective?
