*stating the obvious, or at least evident* Looks like showmanship can be in the eye of the beholder. Take a look at this video of Victor Fung in the WDC tango final, by way of comparison. This guy is very aware of the judges. It's obvious. But he doesn't seem to be playing to the audience. However, take a look at his facial expressions, head styling, etc. He is really playing up the tango persona. (Of course, the music is very different, as well. That may make a difference.)
So what constitutes showmanship, exactly?
