Anyone care to comment on foot contact on teh floor?  In standard (or latin for that matter) should you try to maintain it as much as possible or are there places where you really want to let go?

Does that not depend on the dance and the step. I feel that in foxtrot there is more foot pressure but also release especially in the feather ending and three step. it helps with the timing.

But in the Waltz I find that my contact with the floor is more even but slightly  more pressure on count three? I may be wrong there but the emphasis is definitely in a different place.

You should have contact with the floor all the time in the swing dances unless you are doing kicks or other steps where you are making a feature of lifting the food off the floor. In Tango the feet should lift of the floor but maintain as flat as possible (even though they are only lifted an inch or two). In the swing dances I think of stroking a pet with my feet. In the Tango I think of making foot prints in an inch of new fallen snow.
