I would like to add that I think life has another challenge for me.  Just right now I have no idea what that is...

too often thats the problem I mean the partner has a backup that you did not know about.

you can't reasonably have a backup.  An AM dance partnership is more committed than a marriage; a backup would cause an instant divorce - and lots of crying.

the answer is you stop dancing until you can face the humility that the dance is over - and then you either quit (since there are no other partners) or if you HAVE to dance you do pro-am.

Oh my goodness. That stinks.  I suspect there are less-principled people out there who use the back-up strategy, though, despite the crying.

oh yes, just like the person that finds a new partner before suing for divorce.  its so important to finish one relationship before embarking on another...

Yep.    And when I see that, I always comfort myself with my great-grandmom's old adage. "God don't like ugly."  In the end, I choose not to believe that that kind of ugly behaviour ever leads to good results.

Of course, the time between the doing of dastardly deeds and "the end" can be a tad long for my taste ...
