We used to remind each other that we were on the same team and that the competion was just a test run of what we had practiced.

I like that a lot. Interestingly, I heard a fine young budding star cellist say, in essence, the same thing: "performances are interludes between practises..." stuck in my mind...
But the team thing is crucial. We've had to work on that - my DP was apt to get angry with me during a competition if something went wrong - that made it seem like it was him dancing and I was part of the pit crew! Its got a lot better now but could still improve...

I think the best bet is to keep quiet. Anything the man tells the lady at a competition is heard as, "you suck you suck you suck you suck".
On the contrary, I think anything the lady tells the man is acceptable. I truly do.

DP and I usually say either "bonne chance" or "ganbatte"...respectively French and Japanese for "good luck!"
We also remind each other that we're amazing.
