I had to create a new board to post a video!

Its Mayo and Michelle Officer dancing showcase smooth at the OSB (I saw this on FB).  To me smooth is too often overstated and danced with too much effort.  However, this is gorgeous:

Nope, no lifts in regular smooth - this is a showcase so anything goes.

Too many arms flying in smooth competition. So I feel like it disturbs a lot. I like watching smooth showcases, but not competition. I love Mayo, and when he dances, he is too gorgeous .

I think you just nailed (for me) how I feel

I can imagine that it would look very busy and then you have the legs flicking out as well. At least when they do new vogue they are all doing similar arm styling (no exact as they can change it a bit) and the leg and foot action should be the same. It would be easier to judge NV than smooth.

Once they put an advanced Smooth couple into our heat of 7 pre-championship standard dancers - and then added 5 juniors (read 4 ft high) - and split the floor!  The smooth couple were a total hazzard for the reason you state.  OTOH you seem to see far less collisions in smooth than in standard probably becaues you can always break contact which gives you more options for floorcraft.

That showdance is gorgeous, but any Smooth with Michelle and Mayo is gorgeous. It's worth looking up other videos of them, to see how it can be done well. IMO, they are the only Smooth dancers worth watching. I was privileged to watch her pro-am Smooth at OSB, and could not take my eyes off her -- and that's on a floor on which the current #1, and Everyone's Favorite Smooth Lady, were also competing with their am students.

I totally see what you're saying about the arms being all over the place, simple is usually the better way to go in my opinion, although that certainly isn't the trend at the moment... *shrug*

...And OMGoodness Elise! They put a smooth couple in with standard, along with youth dancers?? That sounds... dangerous...

It was totally weird - but it was also our best result - DP did a wonderful job on floorcraft and all the couples that relied on routines were stymied.  I was wondering if they shouldn't do that more - kinda figure out who can REALLY dance
