competitor? performer? expressor?

My recent thought made me think of who else fits into each catagory for dancesport:
Competitor - you dance to win.
Performer - you dance to get audience approval
Expressor - you dance for an internal need
Please do fill out the poll...

was not sure if you were suppose to leave a commnet. But I believe that true dancing champions are all three of these qualities. they could not do one without the other

Surely we all have all three - but thats is a bit of a cop-out. Maybe I should have made it 'what drives you most?'.
There I changed the rules

Used to be all 3 in the amature days, but now since I'm not doing amature, winning or not weighs much less.

I'm not sure.
I dance because I can't not dance. I don't particularly like performing, but at the same time, I'm not very good at expressing. When I compete, winning is always a plus, but I compete because it's a way to dance more, and to also have something to work towards.
So I'll have to go with all three, I think. They're all reasons why I dance, but they come out in different ways, at different times.
I know, though, that when I dance in my mind, it is to express.

How odd: noone competes with the primary goal of winning! So much for the myth...

This is a hard question. I have to think about it.

I tihnk you are right. I know several members here for whom competing - not nessarily winning - is their driving force for dancesport. To be honest, I thought that was also true for me so the recent revelation is quite an eye opener. I have to look at myself a bit more closely!

When I think I cant win when competing I will use performance as my goal. My vote is expressing and winning but not in that order of importance

I have only been to one competition so far, so my opinion might change down the track. But, the way I feel about it is similar to an arcade game. I like to keep score, even if I'm just trying to beat my own record. It makes the game more interesting. If I play the same game without keeping score, it gets boring very quickly.
I would imagine it's like climbing trees or mountains. You do it because they are there and you want to see how far you can get.

Well, it seems you are then motivated by the competition itself. OTOH still noone has voted for that
