Cantor Rhythm in Viennese
«

Got a place in the VW portion of my show routine where I'm supposed to take some steps forward (solo) in cantor rhythm. Last week, I looked at the video of the run-through for the first time, and my cantor looks really dorky. Somehow, my rise and fall is just not matching with the rhythm at all, and the result is that I look like a drunk trying to climb a stair that isn't there.
Where should the top of the rise be when doing cantor rhythm at Viennese tempo (or any other tempo, for that matter)?

My instructor doesn't like them.
Seriously, cantor rhythm is SQ in three beats. I'm supposed to do forward running steps in cantor rhythm. I can't figure out how to do a non-abrupt rise and fall when I basically have one step to do it on.

Ah, so its like a horse running, not like a jewish synagogue singer?
So why isn't it Canter rather than Cantor?

Are you talking about smooth? Do they even do canter rhythm in international Viennese?... anyway.... I rise on 1 on canter rhythm in smooth Viennese, but start on a back step and hesitate before the fall so it looks more dynamic... so maybe the man should rise on 1 on a forward step...? i don't know the leads part...

I've never heard of it - you would probably get penalized if you did!

Are you suggesting that you are trying to take a longer time on the 1 count?

Sorry for the late bump.
1. Yes, it is a smooth rather than standard step (though some do it in exhibition it'l).
2. Try thinking of it as 1-and 1-and 1-and 1-and (helped me a while ago).

The most beautiful part of the dance is often found in between the steps... and in the movement within the stillness.
