At one of my old workplaces I never got weekends off so to be able to compete I had to strategically use vacation time.
one of my friends has to call on sick as her workplace wont allow them to take one day of leave at a time.

Gotta say, I've done that before. They want us to ask for time off two weeks in advance, and occasionally I forget to get the time off. I make sure I try to swap my shift with someone else, or call in about a day in advance.

We did a dance cruise to Alaska a few years ago. I am not sure about the relationship between the cruise line and the agency, but supposedly they tack on some $$ onto cruise package (perhaps they get discounted cruise rates too) and provide some lessons and parties. Although I have to say that Alaska was much more impressive than dancing on that ship.

A lot of (male) pros serve as 'dance instructors' on cruise ships - but really they are 'dance hosts', there to provide convenient partners for the excess women on the boat.
Were there any useful lessons on the boat?

None for me. It was mainly social-oriented, a little bit of everything, but no in-depth coverage, kind of lessons.
