Judging system and Rule 11

The fundamental tenet of scoring is that the placings are by the 'preponderance of judges'

Thus, if couple A get:
1111113
and B get:
2222221

its pretty obvious that A won.
However what if A gets:
1113333
and B
2222222

A got more first places but did not get the preponderance of judges; B did and B wins.

But thats not rule 11

Anyone like to explain it

You would think that with couple A that the "majority" of judges thought they were third best whereas with couple B the "majority" of couples thought they were the second best so they should be the ones that win.

I also think that the highest and lowest mark should be thrown out (gets rid of some of the politics) and the rest added together or averaged to give the final score for each couple.

Isn't it after you add up all the ranks, who ever gets the lowest sum wins?

ie. 1+1+1+1+1+1+3=9
    2+2+2+2+2+2+1=13

Hence A wins.

In contrast,

1+1+1+3+3+3+3=15
2+2+2+2+2+2+2=14

Hence B wins.

That's fairly accurate when using a point system, but it isn't really Rule 11 which has to do with there only being 3 1s and 4 3s for couple A. In computing R11, this dropped A numerically 8 placements from first whereas couple B was only 5 placements from first. The fact that 'A' had 4  3s, and 'B' had no 3s would in this case give the first place to 'B'. I have to rush off, but, if necessary, I'll try to explain it more tonight when I return from a quick coaching in Atlanta.

oh gosh I think that you would be just shuffling by the end of it....I would like a dancing comp at a social, where couples put themselves forward and all the guests put in there vote who is 1st 2nd etc.  That would be interesting.

That would be great, I would go for that.  Many times we may have not done as well as we hoped but tons of people would come up and say that we were cheated.  All in the eye of the beholder I guess.  Of course many people see a nice overall picture but no matter the level ,the technique looks all the same to them, as they are not educated enough to know the difference.

yes because they re looking for a completely different thing...the social dancer looks for something that is please to watch regardless of the technquie where as judges are looking to soo the tenchique first then overall pricutre..interesting. I hope they will pick up my suggestion and give it ago.

I find the opposite interesting, how similar the popular opinion often is to that of the judges - its not that the average person can select  as well as a judge (which I don't beleive) but that when, for example you go from 20 couplds to 6 you see that the last 6 really are the best of the bunch. 

Still, I'd much rather be judged by an expert than the crowd
