HUGE COMPLAINT

Japanese is such a hard language to learn :-(
My vocabulary would only be 30 words, at best :-( I has the podcasts and educational games, and I can't learn it :-( I really wanted to too, to show my partner I appreciate her and respect her culture and all that :-(

That's really nice of you to care that much. Goodluck and I hope someone can help you.

I can help if you want to know words and grammatical structures and stuff - I've been learning for almost 4 years.
As for the actual learning process, I find it nearly impossible to learn a language without a teacher. Does your partner know you are learning it, because she might be able to help you a little? Or you could do a course in the basics and you might be able to keep going from there, or take a follow-on course.
Ganbatte! (good luck)

I believe there are large elements of Swedish in Japanese - they are both northern nations. So please do drop me a line when you need the input...

My limited understanding of learning a language is that you need to involved yourself into the culture. If she knew you were trying to learn it would be very good if at every opportunity you used the words you know and get assistance with the Grammar.
I have done this with my husband who is Dutch and I learnt as a child, it has come back I am not fluent but I can speak very good English Dutch!

I really want to impress her by "suddenly" having a basic understanding of Japanese... I want to show her that, behind the scenes, I'm really interested in her culture.
I don't want her "teaching" me from scratch :-/

eg d becomes dd pronounced th as in the
f become ff f is pronounced as v.
l becomes LL cant bescribe how its pronounced
c becomes ch but hard NOT like cheese
n sometimnes becomes ngh etc and we have words like Lllanfairpwyllgwyngyllllwyndrobwllllantisiliogogogoch

I am trying to learn Russian. Also hard. But getting on ..... slowly!!!!!!!!!
But I think it is because as an adult learning verses learning as a child is just way different!
