I don't mind the commute, let's just say it will be in comfort, my friend has some quality motors!
I'll keep an eye open for your neice, Dora. Same surname?

My "retirement" job is as a heavy equipment operator. As such, I often drive 12 hours a day, especially in the winter. Plus I lived in Guelph the past 10 years and so would add another 2 hrs (at best) to the commute. Two seasons ago I did 28 12 hr days in a row.
Plus my friend just bought a new merc, added to the roller. It will be a pleasure to drive either. And of course I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of the countryside too. Might make a few stops along the way, take a few days...we'll see. But as you say, if in doubt, there's always British rail. Which is quite nice these days.
Regarding the dvd's, I have a couple of the Blackpool championships and also from Japan. They're terrific and when I need some inspirtation I put them on, to remind myself how it's supposed to look!

Here's a couple of listing of what's available in terms of dance
http://www.salsajive.co.uk/
This is probablly the most comprhensive listing for Salsa
http://www.uk-salsa.co.uk/
If you are absolutely desperate (and I mean desperate) for some dancing you can try 'Modern Jive' aka 'Ceroc' (its a sort of dumbed down verion of ECS and Salsa)- also known as 'the McDonalds of Dance' (says it all really)
http://www.uk-jive.co.uk/
Not the most wonderful dance experience - but definitely interesting if you teach dance or want to discover what is the main driver of social partner dance in the UK. Local venues can vary enormously in quality and demographics. The Ceroc venues are generally the best.
Lancashire round Blackpool is something of a 'dance desert' which is somewhat amusing given the prominence of Blackpool as a competion venue.

Thank you so much. Yes my friend is much into ceroc, though she's hard pressed to be able to teach me the basics. Just back stepping on each foot looks like. But she loves it so no doubt I'll be cerocing madly while I'm over there.
SOmeone here mentioned that the world latin championships are on during the blackpool event I'm attending so hopefully I'll be able to check that out.
All the best

Am going too but can only watch the Latin on Sunday due to sudden change in plans - was looking forward to the whole weekend.
Re: dancing around London/Surrey, don't know anything about Salsa/Ceroc around Surrey/London. For ballroom, some info that was given to me: if you look at Dance Options Cheam website - they have social dancing on Friday evening, Rivoli ballroom has (or used to have) a jive/dancing evening once a month or so (highly recommended to me), Royal Opera House does tea dances on a Friday afternoon and Stardust Ball studio also does social dancing on a Friday evening. I have yet to go to any of theses places but have read about/heard from others

My son and his partner are going to the UK in January for their dancing. They're planning on staying for six months. They become more excited by the day as they plan the trip.
They'll be dancing in Blackpool too. They're looking forward to learning from some wonderful coaches to enhance what they've learnt here in Australia. Just wish I could be there too.

They're still trying to sort that out. They hope to stay somewhere like Surrey and would like to have it organised before leaving Australia. They've booked a few nights in a London motel for when they first arrive. Does anyone have any ideas?
