as I mentioned below....I think we have more acquaintances than we have friends. Which is not a bad thing, I think one of the reasons is about of emtional investment having a lot it can be very draining
Yeap. I agree. I measure(sorry) sometimes, when I meet new people, if they could be my friends or just acquaintance.

arum maculatum: cuckoopint, lords and ladies, wake-robin bod gabhair, Adam and Eve, tender ear, Jack-in-the-pulpit. It is a plant with a great many common names, possibly as many as one hundred.

I've lost most of my friends over time. I was completely immersed in competing with the horses so outside of other horse people you don't get to meet many other people. When I was injured and left the horse world I lost most of those friends. Now with dancing I have become totally involved with that and again time ways it's hard to meet other people. The problem is that the people I meet in dancing are at the studios or comps and so from other cities. They become aquaintances because they live too far away to become hang out with friends. Right now I have one childhood friend that lives far away but is close in my heart and one friend from when I was in the horses and my DP and that is it.
I suppose you move on from the sport etc. that brought you together in the first place and become too busy in your own life and new pusuits to keep up with theirs and they with you.

for me the biggest problem has been my job - its one where you have to move long distances to continue or advance and even though I have kept friends from far away you simply can't sustain those relationships. Making a real friend (other than a partner I suppose) probably takes something like 5 years...

I think you can also grow out of friends. I have one couple that I have known for 17 years but we dont see them often it has become an annual thing, we enjoy h=each others company but because we dance allt he time we just don't have time to catch up, she works 12 hour shifts for 5 days in a row,, but you just don't know when they days are off, they don't call so we are the ones that always organise the catchup.
but it is a longstanding friendship and they are rare and we will still nurture it.
