EM: my sister-in-law smoked daily.  She went to a hypnotist and after one session stopped and never started again (over 8 yrs now)....

I think the essential element though is that you have to truly want to stop.  Lip service (excuse pun, no please give me credit Grin) is not enough....

Agreed on the lip service. I DO want to quit. Have found though smoking is a result of stressful situations. thus need to figure out a way to replace smoking with something else.

Hypnotism will not work on me. Had this once and it actually makes me violently ill. (long story really...lol)

Ah.  Well, maybe you needed hypnotism to cure the violent illness?
Or maybe a smoke...

I don't think any of them work (short of preventing any source) unless they are driven from inside....

To be honest, so should I.  I've got in the habit of drinking red wine while I cook, continuing while I eat and finishing while I try to play the violin.  Post holiday excess.  And the playing is a disaster...

Lets make a practical plan to cut down together.  For me: no drnking whle cooking and no drinking after dinner.

Aaaaand she fails

I bought a bottle of soft drink on the way home, and didn't even remember my resolution until I'd finished it.

I shall drink nothing but water for a week as penance.

Elise, how much (number of glasses) do you drink per day?

Is it still a popular belief that the moderate red wine every day does good for your body? Or has it been proven a myth? I think I've seen the debate a couple of years ago.

I think its pretty well established - though I'm not sure its limited to red wine, it may just be alchol.  Of coruse the 'moderate' is the key.
It varies between 2-4.  The latter is simply too much.
