The cups have to fit just right and placement is important, so I usually end up buying cups.

I hate those cup thingies!  It's so hard to get them placed properly.  And the ones that come with the costume NEVER fit properly, unless you're ... uhh... petite.

Exactly.  I prefer using an actual bra and working to keep the straps covered.  Those cups are not good.  I can see where you could get away with it if you were thin and/or small up top. Otherwise, not so much.
